I haven't tried it, but it seems like the best thing
to do is start off telling family and friends and let
the word of mouth earn you some clients as you
learn.

Good luck!

I am not a travel agent but my partner is. I see a small problem to contend with. When you work in a shop you do get a lot of foot traffic through the door which turn into sales. The way round this would be to possibly target business clients then this would eliminate this problem as they just phone and say get me there at this time. Also if you were willing to make out of hour visits to a persons home you could take the brochure and computer to them, a very personalised service.

hope these ideas are of help

I have a friend that does it, she makes bank! It took her a long while, but basically she has established a large bank of customers that call her whenever they want to travel. It's a big enough base to keep her busy all day so she doesn't even have time to market her business ... but doesn't seem to need to either. She told me that she didn't understand the cruise only, work at home franchises/business opportunities that are out there. She said she wouldn't make any money only offering cruises.

As everyone said it takes time. The most importantthing is not to give up. I completed my Travel training arround two years ago. I advise you to first get registered with IATA, CLIA and ASTA . If you cant get registered with then yet you can signup with a Travel Host Company. A host agency allows you to sell travel. Some you have to pay and others you dont. If you need a recommendation for a good host agency let me know. I know host agencies that will give you everything including GDS access to Sabre, WorldSpan, Galileo, for free as long as you split commision, 75/25 you would get 70%.

What GDS are they teaching you?
